Another Roswell Witness?

September 9, 2007

As the Roswell crash story passes its 60th year there are still names being put forward to the 600 odd witnesses that have been identified. Now there may be another. My interest has always been the involvement of President Truman in the whole story. What has come up so far is not much. He answered a question about flying saucers only a couple days after the famous press release stating that the AAF had recovered a disc. Some of the key military officials around him seemed to be having meeting about something the day after the press release. Now one promising angle has come up that promises new evidence. Two witnesses related to the crash had told people they were sworn to secrecy about their involvement with the crash. They were General Laurence Craigie who had flown into Roswell in early July 1947 on orders from General Curtis LeMay, then Deputy Chief of Air Staff for Research and Development. Another was Major Edwin Easley who was Roswell base Provost Marshal in charge of the Military Police at the crash site.Hoping for a lead to tie in President Truman I sent an e-mail to Roswell researcher Tom Carey asking 1) How many people did they have on record who were sworn to secrecy by the president?  2) Who was the aide who they mentioned sworn one major witness to secrecy.Carey replied that the names of the secret service agents “came from an enlistee on the base at the time of the incident, a Sgt. Robert E. Smith of the 1st Air Transport Unit. According to Smith, there were two secret service men ["suits"] who showed up. One, a fellow named McCann, was the president's personal representative, and the other was a man named Devinnes or Devinney. That's all we have.”A quick check with the Truman library online searchable records showed no one by the name of Devinnes or Devinney, but it did turn up a McCann. From at least 1946 right through to 1952 Truman did have a secret service agent on staff by the name of Gerald B. McCann. So what are the chances? It seems like there might be a new witness, and there might be a connection between the Roswell crash and the Truman White House. More detailed inquiries are off to the Truman Library and the search continues.
