The other day a new book titled Witness to Roswell: Unmasking the 60-Year Cover-Up by Thomas J. Carey and Donald R. Schmitt 2007 revealed the fact that someone connected to the 1947 Roswell crash had left behind a secret to be found following his death. In a 2002 SEALED AFFIDAVIT WALTER G. HAUT, the base Public Information Officer at the Roswell Army Air Base in Roswell, New Mexico, told the true story of what he saw and knew regarding the famous rumored UFO crash.
Prior to the discovery of the notarized affidavit following Haut’s December 2005 death, Haut acknowledged he had sent out a press statement that a flying saucer had been found, but that he could remember very little about what exactly was recovered and whether or not alien bodies were involved. The affidavit confirmed that the recovery was indeed a flying saucer, and that bodies were recovered. It is a nice story that adds great weight to the fact that we are not alone in the Universe.
The Haut story has made many in Ufology happy, but it has made me sad. I have been in the UFO business for 32 years and no one has ever told me a good UFO secret. At least not a government secret. As well as being frustrating, this is strange and has always bugged me. After all, I have worked on the government aspect of the UFO story most of my career.
I recall trying to get someone to talk who had a good UFO secret to tell. In the late 1980s I headed up a research
group from around the world who were trying to get Dr. Eric Walker to talk. Dr. Walker was the former President of Penn State University, who was identified by the late Dr. Robert Sarbacher as a man who had attended an entire set of briefing held at Wright Patterson AFB on a crashed flying saucer that had been taken there. T. Scott Crain and myself finally published a book on our Walker investigation describing all the information that had been dragged out of him. The book was titled “UFOs, MJ-12, and the Government.”
Although Dr. Walker did reveal some of what he knew, we were certain that 90% of his vast knowledge of the inner working of the cover-up was still his secret. He would simply state “UFOs are a subject I do not talk about.” “Study something else.” “You are wasting your time.”
I spent many hours thinking about how pissed I would be if I were Walker, and I was not able to tell the role I had played in the biggest story in history. Maybe, I thought, they have a Top Secret vault somewhere, where all the top people involved in the UFO cover-up could tell their story so their great great grandchildren could be proud of their great great grandfather. What a secret to have to take to the grave, and he did take it there.
Walker was dying of congestive heart failure and knew it. When he died I searched his files at the library for a UFO file I knew he kept on our research contacts with him (a long story). I didn’t find the file but his son, a medical Dr. stated that there was a UFO file in his father’s collection at one point. When he went to transfer the files to the University, after his father’s death, it was gone. We assumed Dr. Walker destroyed it prior to his death. It reportedly, according to the son, contained information on a “crash in Pennsylvania.” What a shame!
Over the years I have read of many researchers who were approached by inside sources, willing to spill the innermost government UFO secrets. As much as I waited, this never happened to me. In my darker moments I started to think, “Maybe Phil Klass was right. Maybe there are no hidden government UFO secrets.”
Yet Ufology is full of researchers who say they have been given “the call.”
Len Stringfield, for example, was a researcher who worked on alien autopsy stories. He lectured on the subject for the first time in the late 1970s at the MUFON world conference in Dayton Ohio. I was there, and had to visit Len in another second hotel room because he got threats over the lecture he was about to give. As the years went by Len claimed he was contacted by hundreds of people telling him secret stories about alien crashes and autopsies. He had hundreds, and I have none. Forgive me while I search for a tissue.
Bill Moore was a researcher I knew back in the 1980s. He had all sorts of contacts, so many in fact that he gave them all bird names so he and Jamie Shandera, his research partner, could talk about them on a phone they believed was tapped.
My friends Bob and Ryan Wood were contacted in the 1990s by more than one person and were provided thousands of pages of documents. I sat with Ryan in his home outside of Denver while he went through some of the latest. Although, some have claimed the documents are not legit, they are very impressive. It is obvious that this is not the work of one of two people. It would have taken a large agency with a great deal of inside information to produce what the Woods have shown me.
Yet, while Ryan went through the latest pile of stuff and described the efforts he and his father are making to research the names, dates, and events described in the documents, my mind wandered back to the fact I was still a virgin. I had never been invited for a date with the tellers of secrets.
I was for years the only researcher who worked on the role of the Canadian government in the early days of Ufology. Yet I was never contacted by anyone inside the government saying, “I’ve got a secret. This is what the government is doing now.” Therefore whenever I am asked in an interview what the Canadian government knows about UFOs, I usually reply “much less than you and I.” They don’t appear to have any secrets, or at least none have been shared with me – none – never.
I have also spent many years working on the White House role in the UFO mystery and have lectured all over the United States. I even lectured twice in Washington D.C. And yet never has anyone come forward and said, “I worked in the ------- White House and you are full of shit, or here’s a UFO story you didn’t mention. – none- never.
The closest I got to a White House secret is a lady who came up after a lecture I had given on the Presidents in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. She claimed to be the sister of a woman who owned the famous Hot Springs Arkansas restaurant where Bill and Hillary used to frequent. She stated that either Bill and Hillary, or their close friends had had a UFO sighting in the late 1970s and that is why they were so interested in the subject. Being the smart guy that I am, I asked this older lady to write me with the details instead of getting her name. She, of course, never wrote. I was never able to confirm the story through any of the Arkansas contacts I had.
I also met a woman who was working in a high level position at the Jimmy Carter Library in Atlanta. She had worked in the Carter White House, and also with the Joint Chiefs. After a couple conversations with her she began to tell me how she believed she had been abducted on a number of occasions. It was a really cool story but not a government secret, and maybe not even a secret. I sensed she had told others because even my archivist in the library seemed to know about her.
The fact that no one has told me a good government secret is a fact that I have even talked about in some of the many lectures I have given around the country. I would tell them that No one has ever told me “Call me Mr. X, and I’m going to tell you something real secret about UFOs.” I told audiences I didn’t even have a Richard Doty type deep throat try to feed me disinformation. This made me feel even worse because that I wasn’t even close enough to the truth to force the spooks to send me off down another road. I sometimes feel like the Rodney Dangerfield of Ufology.
There was one time when I came close. I thought I finally had the call from Mr. X. I got an e-mail from a guy by the name of Louis. He didn’t use his last name and googling his e-mail address didn’t show up anything. He said he had some documents he wanted me to see. I felt so excited thinking I had finally arrived. The Secret documents came from the Douglas Aircraft Corporation prior to it becoming McDonald Douglas in 1967. The documents indicated they had approved some sort of UFO and anti-gravity research.
Louis and I haggled back and forth. I contacted Robert Wood, a UFO researcher, who had worked for Douglas and whose name was all over the documents. He was not happy they were out, but confirmed work had gone on which was approved but not supported or financed by the company. My big secret story was confirmed but suddenly not so big anymore.
Then came the big letdown.
My contact for the documents agreed to release the 200 odd pages he had. My friend U.K. researcher Andrew Johnson offered to help. It would be his job to publish them to the net. My many years of research had finally paid off.
Then came my reality moment checkup.
Louis finally detailed to me how he got the documents. Rather than a midnight raid inside the Douglas Aircraft vault with the help of Spiderman, he had bought the whole set of documents on Ebay for $31.00. Apparently, one of the people working on the Douglas effort had died and Louis found the documents in a barn after buying the Washington State property. Never have 200 pages of unreleased documents been such a letdown.
Frank Warren is a man who doesn’t know my sadness. He is the man who runs the website postsecret.com. It is a place where Frank posts some of the over 100,000 secret message postcards he has received from around the world. Frank provides his home address and encourages strangers to send him postcards containing messages of their deepest secrets that they have told no one.
He has published two books containing some of the best or most meaningful secrets he has received from strangers. He gets 100-200 postcards every day in his mailbox from all over the world, and reads them all.
Like UFO secrets he does not know if the secrets are true, but as people include artwork as part of the secret a lot of work has gone into submitting a postcard.
Well postcard secret takes the cake. He gets over 100,000 of some of the deepest and darkest secrets that are carried around by mankind, and I am still struggling to get one UFO secret.
That is a sad fact of life, but life isn’t over yet and I’m not giving up. My address is
